setting
superpowers is set in new york city, a city chosen for both its centralization and diversity. it's considered one of many sanctuary cities for superhumans throughout the world. of course, that doesn't mean your character has to be from the city! your character can be from anywhere in the world, but they must frequent the city regularly (at least once a month). other sanctuary cities include: austin, berlin, boston, chicago, copenhagen, denver, dublin, helsinki, london, los angeles, madrid, milan, osaka, paris, tokyo, toronto, stockholm, syndney, vancouver, and more.

although no one knows how long superhumans have been around, it was estimated that between the 1940s-1960s that roughly 0.25% of the world's population was superhuman. advances in medical technology allowed researchers to uncover the two genes that would identify superhumans and those with superhuman capabilities. by the 1980s, it was routine for doctors to screen for the presence of these genes during pregnancy.

realizing that the superhuman population was growing exponentially, governments around the world didn't waste time. anyone born after 1980 who presented with one of the known superhuman genes was immediately registered to a global database. by 2000, it was estimated that over 5% of the world's population was superhuman.

present day technology allows for the scanning and tracking of individuals, by both public and private entities. there are some who wish to help those with the superhuman genes, and there are some who wish to harm them. superhumans have, since the 1980s, faced unyielding prejudices that have led to their segregation. children with the genes are sent to specialized schools and entire neighborhoods are now regarded as "unsafe" by baseline humans. there are some lawmakers out there, however, pushing for equality. starting in 2018, some of them were even superhumans themselves.

superhumans
there are two ways that your character could have gained their superpowers. either they were born with the x-gene and their powers presented at birth, the onsent of puberty, or under extreme duress; or they were born with the m-gene and their powers presented when they were exposed to correct mutagen (typically radiation). your character can have more than one superpower, but they shouldn't be invincible. our hope is to provide our members with an opportunity to evolve or add additional superpowers to their characters through plots and as a reward for completing your required activity each month. with that said, your characters should have drawbacks or flaws related to their superpowers that will help to balance them.

if you're interested in playing someone with an unactivated m-gene, or even a baseline human with ties to the superhuman community, you're more than welcome to. our goal is to ensure that everyone is included in our monthly plots. would-be superheroes need someone to save, the activation of an m-gene can be cause for chaos, and the superhuman community needs baseline human advocates.

currently, there are no x-men or brotherhood of mutants equivalents. that's not to say that there won't be! if you'd like to play a character who might want to start their own group of superheroes or supervillains, get in touch with us and let us know. we'd love to see the natural development of these types of groups through activity and interaction, and we're willing to do whatever it takes to help you get there.
